Stress

Also called Axis

The direction of the imaginary line through the thinnest points of a round letter, which tells you what tool the face descends from.

Stress: a drawn diagram with the stress marked in vermilion.
Stress, drawn, Drew Ink. Drawn 2026-09-10.
Stress: Quo quidem in libro qua in Jenson's roman of 1470, the round letters thinnest along an axis that leans back to the left, the pen's angle.
Oblique stress in Jenson's roman, 1470, Nicolas Jenson, printer.
Public domainPublic domain: Printed in Venice in 1470; Jenson died in 1480, and the book is out of copyright everywhere; Commons tags the file public domain, and this house reads a faithful photograph of a flat public-domain page as carrying no new copyright.

What it is made of

what it isthe axis through the thinnest parts of a round letter, set by the angle a broad pen was held at
measured on the ink, and then corrected from the sourcethe four walls of the o differ by at most 1.083 to 1 on twenty-one of twenty-three families, so THE O HAS NO STRESS. But "this shelf is monolinear", which this row said for one commit, is wrong: 17 of 23 families draw at least one stroke THINNER than the stem, the e's crossbar between 0.660 and 0.950 of itthe o measured on the fixed shelf, 2026-09-24; the crossbar read from the shelf's own stroke data rather than off its ink, because an o is ONE stroke of ONE width and a measurement taken on it can never see a crossbar. Corrected 2026-09-11 from the stroke data, which says what the ink only implies
the two that are not monolinear are not stressed eitherDrew Perforate reads 2.692 because its o is six dashes and the tool measures the gaps between them; Drew Terrace reads 1.1 because its o is a hexagon, flat at the top and bottom and pointed at the sides, so the run the tool takes across the middle crosses a corner and reads 88 against 80. Drew Engrave and Drew Outline, which read 6.75 and 5.857 until 2026-09-24, now read 1.083 and 1.0: the bar that crossed their rings at the seam is goneall four checked by rendering the o at 300px on 2026-09-24, Terrace and Perforate again on 2026-09-28. A construction is not a pen angle and the record does not call one the other
what the first version of this measurement saidthat Drew Condensed is horizontally stressedit read 68 against 69 in a rendered edge and named a direction off it. That is antialiasing. The tool says monolinear below 1.10 now, because inventing a property for twenty families is worse than reporting that there is none to find
